JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is a community-oriented policing position that involves working with the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation as well as liaison duties between the school, community agencies, and the Police Department. This position performs general duty law enforcement work to protect life and property in the Town.

Examples of Work

1. Protect lives and property of the citizens and the public school students.
2. Investigate criminal activities committed on or adjacent to school property.
3. Counsel public school students in special situations, such as students suspected to be engaged in criminal misconduct, when requested by the principal or the principal's designee, or by the parent of the student.
4. Answer questions that students may have about Indiana Criminal or Juvenile Law.
5. Assist other law enforcement officers with outside investigations concerning students attending the school(s) to which the SRO is assigned.
6. Provide traffic control during the arrival and departure of students when a school crossing guard is absent.
7. Serve as a liaison between the school(s), community agencies, and law enforcement. Disseminate information beneficial to public order and safety.
8. Inform the students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens.
9. Formulate educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crimes against persons and property in the school.
10. Participate in campus activities, student organizations, and athletic events when invited and feasible.
11. Be aware at all times of the responsibility to improve the image of the uniformed law enforcement officer in the eyes of the students and the community.
12. Meet with school officials on a regular basis to evaluate daily operations.
13. Respond appropriately for truancy related problems in the community and work with the school and families to reduce truancy.
14. Respond to citizens and merchants regarding complains about school-aged students during the hours of school and perform job responsibilities as outlined in the Deputy Marshal job description as directed by supervision.
15. Adhere to all Town of Ellettsville and police department policies, as well as applicable school policies.
16. Perform other duties as may be assigned by supervision. Provide assistance to patrolman when requested or when SRO believes needed.
